“We had nowhere to hang our patio lights.”
That is usually how this starts. The lights are already in the cart, or already in the garage. Then you stand in the yard and realize there is nothing to hang them from — the trees are too young or in the wrong place, there is no pergola, and the fence is too low to lift anything to a useful height.
So the lights end up draped along a railing at knee height, or they stay boxed for another summer.
Your yard stops deciding the layout
Ten feet tall, standing on their own, the poles put the hanging point exactly where you want the light rather than where the trees happen to be.
Two poles make a run. Four around a table make a lit room outdoors. Six around the patio give the whole space a ceiling — with nothing attached to the house and nobody to book.
Will it actually stay standing?
The first thing everyone asks about a 10 ft pole.
0.98-inch (2.5 cm) tube. Diameter is the number to compare between poles — a wider tube is stiffer under a loaded light string.
Four-prong ground fork, 11.4 in across and 8.1 in deep (29 × 20.6 cm), so the load spreads instead of pivoting on one spike.
One-piece straight top hook that does not open up under tension.
Powder-coated rust-resistant steel, built to be left outside.
Comparing poles? Check three numbers on any listing: tube diameter, base width, and whether the top hook is one piece.
Screws together by hand
No tools for the poles themselves.
Each section is threaded. You twist them together, fit the ground fork to the bottom, and stand the pole up. A screwdriver only comes out if you are fence-mounting.
Because the sections unscrew again, the whole set packs down flat and goes in the shed out of season.
Four steps, start to finish
01 — CONNECT THE RODS
Twist the threaded pole sections together.
02 — ATTACH THE BASE
Secure the ground fork base to the bottom section.
03 — INSTALL YOUR WAY
Push the fork into soil or grass, or clamp the pole to a fence using the included clips and screws.
04 — HANG THE LIGHTS
Rest your string lights across the pole heads.
How many poles do I need?
Each span covers 15–18 ft. Count your runs, then add one pole per extra corner.
2 poles — one run. A patio edge, or pole to house.
4 poles — up to three runs. A dining table or hot tub surround.
6 poles — up to five runs. A full patio canopy with runs crossing.
8 poles — up to seven runs. A large entertaining area.
10 poles — up to nine runs. Big backyards, events, garden weddings.
Measure your longest run first and check it against the string lights you already own.
Will it suit my yard?
Two things to know before you buy
String lights are not included.
These are the poles only. That is deliberate — you pick the bulb style and the run length instead of being stuck with whatever came in the box. Any outdoor string light with a hanging loop sits on the top hooks.
The ground fork needs soft ground.
Soil or grass is ideal. If your space is all concrete or decking, clamp the poles to a fence, post or wall instead — 6 metal clips, 12 screws and 12 anchors are in the box for exactly that.
What’s in the box
Per 2-pole set:
2 × ground fork bases
6 × threaded rod sections
2 × top hook sections
6 × metal pipe clamps
12 × cross recessed screws
12 × plastic expansion anchors
Larger packs scale the same way — a 6-pole set contains three times the above.
Poles vs. building something
The other ways to get a light overhead all cost more time, more money, or a hole in your wall.

Questions, answered
Are string lights included?
No. These are the poles only, designed to carry globe, Edison or fairy lights you already own, so you can pick the bulb style and the run length that suit your space.
How tall is each pole and how far apart do they go?
Each pole is 10 ft (300 cm) tall with a 0.98-inch (2.5 cm) steel tube. The recommended span between two poles is 15–18 ft.
Will a 10 ft pole stay upright with lights on it?
The four-prong ground fork is 11.4 in across and 8.1 in deep (29 × 20.6 cm), which spreads the load rather than pivoting on a single spike, and the 0.98-inch tube resists bowing. In very soft ground or exposed, windy spots, use the included clamps to fix the pole to a fence or post.
Do I need tools?
Not for the poles. The rod sections are threaded and screw together by hand, then the ground fork attaches to the bottom section. A screwdriver is only needed if you fence-mount.
Can I use these on a concrete patio or decking?
The ground fork needs soil, grass or soft ground. On a hard surface, clamp the pole to a wood fence, post or wall using the 6 metal clips, 12 screws and 12 expansion anchors included in the box.
How many poles should I buy?
Two poles give one 15–18 ft run. Four cover a dining table or hot tub surround. Six give a full patio a canopy. Eight to ten suit large backyards, parties and garden weddings.
Will this damage my house or my deck?
Nothing is fixed to the building unless you choose the fence-mount option. The poles stand on their own, which is why they work for renters and for new builds with nothing mature to hang from.
Can I take them down again?
Yes. The sections unscrew, so the set packs down flat for storage out of season or moves to a different part of the yard.
